Gartner has identified eight technologies that will transform business over the next decade and should be on the radar of CIOs today.
Already making an impact today is Web 2.0, which although entering the backlash phase Gartner calls 'The trough of disillusionment', will emerge to cause considerable transformation impact within two years, once firms gain a deeper understanding of the technologies and cultural impact.
Two other technologies that will make their mark within two to five years are service-oriented architecture (SOA) and cloud computing, both of which Gartner believes will have a profound effect on the role and capabilities of IT. Public virtual worlds, at the peak of their hype last year, will also begin to show their worth as a significant media channel for building communities.
Looking further ahead to the five to 10 year timeframe, advances in 3D printing, RFID and context delivery architecture will take centre stage.
"Technologies that have passed the trigger where they start to be interesting to businesses include 3D printing, surface computing, augmented reality and mobile robots. We expect early adopters to start applying these in novel ways and driving new classes of application, such as using 3D printers to dramatically change the supply chain by creating products and replacement parts at the point of need," said Jackie Fenn, vice president and Gartner fellow.
